In 2013 OCA offers a studio residency for a Norwegian artist at the International Artists in Residency programme at 18th Street Art Center in the Santa Monica neighbourhood of Los Angeles, CA, USA. The deadline for applications is 1 May 2013.
A live/work studio within the 18th Street Art Center complex is provided for a period of 3 months: 1 October 2013 through 31 December 2013. Only Norwegian citizens are eligible for this grant. Please note that the programme is not open to current art students. The residency is optimal for artists seeking time and space in order to pursue specific studio-based project work. Residents are encouraged to participate in open studio events and other activities within the broader programme of the centre.
Founded in 1988, 18th Street Art Center is a community-based, multi-disciplinary non-profit arts organisation housed on a campus of buildings, which includes artists' studios, exhibition spaces, an artist residency programme and other resident organisations, such as a performance space, a film/video production facility and Otis College of Art & Design's MFA programme in Public Practice, among others. Through 18th Street's exhibitions, workshops and festivals, the organisation encourages and supports the creation of experimental contemporary art, and fosters collaboration and interaction between artists and arts organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
The grant includes access to an approximately 100 square meter furnished live/work space with high ceilings, skylights, phone, wireless Internet, satellite TV and a bicycle. In addition, a travel grant of 8 000 NOK for travel expenses and a monthly stipend of 9 000 NOK will be provided to assist with living expenses.
Following the residency, the grantee is expected to write a comprehensive report to the Office for Contemporary Art Norway about their experience during the residency.
OCA has set up an online application system for applications for International Support and International Residencies. This system should be used to apply to the Los Angeles residency with a deadline of 1 May 2013. To apply for the Residency Programme please go to: www.stikk.no.
Please direct any questions about the residency or the application process to Paul Brewer, Interim Coordinator for International Relations.
