OCA Semesterplan - Autumn 2011

---------------------------------------------------------------------

`What is Aesthetic Freedom Today?', a lecture by Christoph Menke on 28 September, 19:00

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Menke has argued that the correct understanding of modernity must be done in relation to tragedy. Modernity has not overcome tragedy; rather, it should be seen as tragic in itself. In such a scenario, the focus on the individual and his and her concrete needs does not lead to political quietism but into an engine of political discontent and revolution. Within such philosophical claims, how is it possible to posit the aesthetic experience as one of meaning?

The lecture is held in tandem with the launch of dOCUMENTA (13) notebook series 100 Notes - 100 Thoughts at OCA. Christoph Menke recently published the notebook titled Aesthetics of Equality. The lecture will be followed by a discussion involving Menke, Chus Martínez, dOCUMENTA (13) Head of Department and others. The notebooks will be available for purchase through the Oslo-based Torpedo Bookshop.

In 2001, he founded Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo’s creation lab, for which he is still the director.
