Menke has argued that the correct understanding of modernity
must be done in relation to tragedy. Modernity has not overcome
tragedy; rather, it should be seen as tragic in itself. In such a
scenario, the focus on the individual and his and her concrete
needs does not lead to political quietism but into an engine of
political discontent and revolution. Within such philosophical
claims, how is it possible to posit the aesthetic experience as one
of meaning?
The
lecture is held in tandem with the launch of dOCUMENTA (13)
notebook series 100 Notes - 100 Thoughts at OCA. Christoph
Menke recently published the notebook titled Aesthetics of
Equality. The lecture will be followed by a discussion
involving Menke, Chus Martínez, dOCUMENTA (13)
Head of Department and others. The notebooks will be available for
purchase through the Oslo-based Torpedo Bookshop.

of the Busan Biennale 2012. He served as a guest curator for the

Ange Leccia (b.1952) lives and works in Paris,
France. A former resident of Villa Medici in Rome and Villa
Kujoyama in Kyoto, Leccia’s career started in the 1980s with his
'arrangements'. His works are constantly questioning different
media, combining them, mixing them, even exhibiting them through a
range of themes such as the sea (La Mer) and other
atmospheric elements that are fascinating because of their rhythmic
character. In 2001, he founded Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo’s
creation lab, for which he is still the director.
Tristan Bera (b.1984) has a particular interest in
decadent aesthetics and crossover exhibitions and has worked on
mainstream exhibitions such as ‘Dada’ (2005/06) at the Centre
Pompidou, Paris, France; ‘Richard Wagner: visions d’artistes’
(2005) and ‘Gainsbourg’ 2008 at Cité de la Musique, Paris. Bera is
currently curating a one-year project at Zürich Kunsthalle, Zürich,
Switzerland, titled ‘Human Valley’. Bera is currently working at Le
Pavillon/Palais de Tokyo’s creative lab.
