International Support – Next Application Deadline: 15 February 2010

OCA provides financial support on a quarterly basis for international projects involving Norwegian artists and/or cultural producers. Applications are accepted from Norwegian artists, international artists living and working in Norway and non-profit organisations. Priority is given to exhibitions taking place in key international art institutions and project spaces. Support is also extended to solo and group exhibitions organised by international curators, as well as to Norwegian art professionals organising exhibitions and projects abroad.

OCA has implemented an online application system for applications for the International Support Programme. This system should be used for the 2010 First Quarter Application Review, with a deadline of 15 February 2010. For more information on Application Process, please click here.

The Office for Contemporary Art Norway is responsible for the Norwegian participation in the Platform China Residency in Beijing, People's Republic of China; the International Studio Program Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany; the Residency Berlin Mitte, Berlin, Germany; the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York, NY, USA; the Platform Garanti Istanbul Residency Program, Istanbul, Turkey; the International Artist in Residency Programme at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, in Brussels, Belgium; and at Capacete, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil.

Künstlerhaus Bethanien Residency Programme – Upcoming Deadline: 15 February 2010

In 2010–11, OCA offers a twelve-month residency programme for an artist at the International Studio Program Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, from 1 December 2010 to 15 November 2011. Applications are accepted from Norwegian artists and international artists residing in Norway. Please notice that the residency is not available for BA or MA students. Applications will be assessed by an International Jury appointed by OCA, together with a representative from Künstlerhaus Bethanien.

Capacete Residency Programme – Upcoming Deadline: 15 February 2010

In 2010 OCA offers a residency programme for an artist, an independent curator, a cultural producer or an independent art critic at Capacete, a forum and interdisciplinary project operating in Brazil since 1997. The duration of the programme is 4 months, from 1 September 2010 to 25 December 2010, between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, including two-month stays in each city. Applications are accepted from Norwegian artists and international artists residing in Norway. Please notice that the residency is not available for BA or MA students. Applications will be assessed by an International Jury appointed by OCA, together with a representative from Capacete.

WIELS Residency Programme – Upcoming Deadline: 15 February 2010

In 2010 OCA offers a residency programme for an artist, at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels. The duration of the programme is nine months, from 1 April until 31 December 2010. Applications are accepted from Norwegian artists and international artists residing in Norway. The programme is designed for artists who have already elaborated a specific and promising aesthetic language but seek artistic, theoretical and professional support in order to develop their practice. Please notice that the residency is not available for BA or MA students. Applications will be assessed by an International Jury appointed by OCA, together with a representative from WIELS Contemporary Art Centre.

Platform Garanti Istanbul Residency Programme – Upcoming Deadline: 15 February 2010

In 2010 OCA offers a three-month residency programme at Platform Garanti Istanbul, for an art critic, an artist working as writer, a curator or an artist, from 1 September until 30 November 2010. Applications are accepted from Norwegian citizens and international citizens residing in Norway. Applicants need to respond to the diversity of Istanbul and to an open engagement with other international artists and cultural producers from different disciplines. It is suggested that the applicants have no other engagements during the period of their stay. Please notice that the residency is not available for BA or MA students. Applications will be assessed by an International Jury appointed by OCA, together with a representative from Platform Garanti.

At the core of Ane Graff's work is an investigation into the nature of matter. Graff examines the surface and structure of organic mass. The 2009 exhibition 'SLIDING' at Bethanien Künstlerhaus, Berlin, saw Graff continuing this examination into the concepts of molecular diffusion and particle decay. Graff's drawings and sculptures share a clear interest in the science of materials, the materials diffusion and drift. Recent exhibitions include 'SLIDING', Bethanien Künstlerhaus, Berlin, 'LIFE FORMS', Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm and THE DRAWING BIENNALE 2010 (upcoming), Moss, Norway. Graff lives and works in Oslo and Berlin.

Tarje Eikanger Gullaksen
artist b. 1973, Lørenskog, Norway, lives and works in Berlin and Oslo

Tarje Eikanger Gullaksen's artistic practice includes text, photo, film, installation and sculpture. In his art he investigates objects and signs in relation to language, transgression, representation, transformation and loss. Recently his work has been shown at Artspeak, Vancouver, The Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and Galerie Medhi Chouakri, Berlin.

The Grammar of Forms

In winter/spring 2010, OCA continues with the project 'Columns, Grottos, Niches: The Grammar of Forms – On Art Criticism, Writing, Publishing and Distribution' launching the new season with the participation and workshop led by AA Bronson, member of General Idea and founder of Printed Matter, New York City; Mikkel Astrup's workshop on Beckett and literarity and a continuation of Will Bradley's series of workshops on art and criticism, among others. Seminar: 'Questions & Dialogue – A Radical Manifesto'
School of Art & Aesthetics, JNU, New Delhi

Office of Contemporary Art Norway, and CoLab Art & Architecture in cooperation with the School of Art & Aesthetics, JNU in New Delhi organizes 'Questions & Dialogue – A Radical Manifesto', a seminar around the practice of K P Krishnakumar and The Kerala Radical Group. This one-day seminar, the second research initiative organised by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway, Oslo in cooperation with CoLab Art & Architecture will take place in Delhi in continuation of OCA's project initiative 'Reflections in Indian Modernism' launched with 'Nasreen Mohamedi: Notes' in 2009. This conference to include speakers artists Anita Dube and Amar Kanwar and curators Gavin Jantjes and Will Bradley will survey the traditions of modernisn in India and take as its point of departure the artistic and political practice of K P Krishnakumar and the 'Kerala Radical Group of Painters and Sculptors', which he helped found in the late 1980s. AA Bronson

AA Bronson lived and worked as a member of the artists' group General Idea from 1969 through 1994. They presented over 100 solo exhibitions world-wide in their 25 years together, and exhibited in the Paris (1977), Venice (1982), Sydney (1983), and São Paulo (1998) Biennales, as well as Documenta (1983). Together they published the influential FILE Magazine (1972-1989), and invented and founded Art Metropole (1974), an early center for artists' editions and publications in Toronto. In the last seven years of their time together they worked solely on the subject of AIDS. Since the deaths of his partners in 1994, AA Bronson has worked and exhibited as a solo artist, curator, educator, animateur, and gay icon. Solo exhibitions include those presented at the Secession, Vienna (2000); the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2001); the MIT List Visual Art Center, Cambridge (2002); and the Power Plant, Toronto (2003). His most recent exhibition, 'AA Bronson's School for Young Shamans' (2008), at John Connelly Presents, New York, NY, was applauded for its inclusion of a younger generation. He is represented in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada. He has won numerous awards, and was most recently named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Author and editor of numerous texts and books, including his autobiography Negative Thoughts (2001), and Queer Zines (2008), he lives and works as an artist and healer in Manhattan, where he is also the Director of Printed Matter, Inc., and the Artistic Director of the Institute for Art, Religion, and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary. He was appointed Senior Critic at the School of Art, Yale University, in 2006, and given honorary doctorates by NSCAD University in 2007 and Concordia University in 2009. See more at aabronson.com.

Curator David Elliott, Artistic Director of the 17th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney, Australia has invited Mette Tronvoll and Gardar Eide Einarsson to exhibit within the 17th Biennale of Sydney taking place in various venues throughout Sydney, Australia from 12 May to 1 August 2010. The 2010 edition of the biennial will celebrate the beauty of distance while exploring the affirmative power of art in the face of threats. Within the biennial, Mette Tronvoll will exhibit photographs from the series Mongolia, which portraits Mongolian nomads and their houses and RENA 006, a series of portraits and landscapes from the military camp Rena Leir in Østerdalen, Norway. Eide Einarsson will produce a new light/text work to be installed on the roof of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney

The artist duo Fine Art Union has been invited by Göran Green, Galleri 21 in Malmö, Sweden to hold a solo exhibition. Entitled 'Fine Art Union Club', it will present videos, installations, scenography, objects, sculptures, postcards, CDs and a publication – all related to performance and action works. Fine Art Union will also present a life performance and curate a night of performances by other artists. 'Fine Art Union Club' will take place between 6 and 28 February 2010.

Per-Oskar Leu and Fredrik Værslev present the project 'Ideal Setting' at Galleri Ping-Pong in Malmö, Sweden from 6 to 27 February 2010. 'Ideal Settings' is an ongoing project initiated by Værslev in which he invites colleagues to re-contextualize an existing work, by placing it in an 'ideal setting' of their own choosing. The piece is then photographed in it's new location, and presented as a collaborative work between Værslev and the invited artist. For the exhibition in Malmö, Per-Oskar Leu has chosen the painting If You Can Remember It, You Weren't Really There. 'Ideal Setting' is curated by Gert-Olle Göransson, manager Galleri Ping Pong.

In May 2010 Anne Katrine Dolven holds a solo exhibition Platform China in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The exhibition, titled 'Ahead' will present three works, which according to the curator, David Thorp, Associate Curator, Platform China demonstrate seminal aspects of Dolven's practice. The works are the video-installation Between the Morning and the Handbag, the film-loop Amazon and the video-installation Ahead. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

At the Fort Jesus, The National Museums of Kenya in Mombasa, Kenya, Marianne Heske will present the installation 'Tète à tète'. The work is part of an ongoing project about migration which will have it's final presentation at Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Norway on November 2010. Curated by Ali S. Baakabe, Principal Curator, The National Museums of Kenya, the installation stays on view throughout January 2010. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

Jesper Alvær has been invited to exhibited in 'Inventories' curated by Tomáż Pospiszyl, independent curator and teacher at FAMU, Film and TV School, The Academy of Performing Arts, Prague, Czech Republic and taking place at Brno House of Art, Brno, Czech Republic. 'Inventories' is one of the exhibition components of 'Formats Transformation 89-09', a project looking at changes in the Czech Republic and Central European society between 1989 and 2009. Within 'Inventories' Alvær presents ERRATUM – Representing the Nation, a collaboration with Czech artist Isabela Grosseov´, consisting of a bilingual publication containing the statements of 28 museum directors in Czech Republic. 'Inventories' stays on view until 17 January 2010.

Lars Laumann has been invited by Ruba Katrib, Associate Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, USA to exhibit within 'The Reach of Realism' at Museum Of Contemporary Art in North Miami till 14 February 2010. According to the curator, 'the exhibition explores the contradictions inherent in the increasing distrust of images and the impulse to capture a sense of accuracy in contemporary art'. Within 'The Reach of Realism' Laumann exhibits Shut up Child, This Ain't Bingo, which tells the true story of the relationship between Norwegian artist Kjersti Andvig and her collaborative partner Carlton Turner, a Texan death row inmate. Other exhibiting artists are Phil Collins, Wolfgang Tillmans and Sara VanDerBeek.

Until 7 March, Victor Boullet exhibits within 'Niet Normaal – Difference on Display', taking place at Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and curated by Ine Geversm, Artistic Director, 'Niet Normaal'. The project, organized by Foundation Niet Normaal, consists of performances, discussions, film screenings, lectures and an exhibition looking into the concept of normality in contemporary society. Within 'Niet Normaal', Boullet will exhibit 'Kate', a series of photographs documenting the physical transformation of a young Jewish girl. Among the exhibited artists are Yael Bartana, Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Damien Hirst and Bruce Nauman.

Lars Morell and Gardar Eide Einarsson to exhibit within 'Fiction', at the Fondation d'Entreprise Ricard in Paris, France from 10 May to 5 June. The exhibition, curated by Agnes Violeau and Christian Alandete, directors/editors, of J'aime beaucoup ce que vous faites..., investigates the border between image and text exploring possible ways of interpreting visual in text-based works. Within 'Fiction' Morell exhibits Food for Thought, a sill-life work presented on plinths and composed of various media such as photographs, drawings and text, produced for the exhibition. Among other exhibiting artists are Jean-Baptiste Bernardet and Jorge Pedro Nunez.

Kjell Bjørgeengen has been invited by Tilman Artistic Director and Petra Bungert, Executive Director CCNOA in Brussels, Belgium to exhibit within 'Composite visions_CCNOA', a touring group exhibition organized by CCNOA. 'Composite visions_CCNOA', which takes place at CAN Centre d'art Neuchatel in Neuchatel, Switzerland, from 13 February to 21 March looks into the discourse surrounding the historical, formal and contemporary explorations within the concept of 'reductive'. For 'Composite Visions' Kjell Bjørgeengen will produce a new video-work in which he looks into the idea of 'reductive' by self-imposing certain restrictions on the production process. Among other exhibiting artists are Julian Dashper, Amy Granat and Clemens Hollerer.

From 19 November 2009 to 20 January 2010, Anne Szefer Karlsen and Heidi Nikolaisen participate in 'On Articulating Works & Places', an exhibition, conference and publication as part of Art in Marrakech Festival, taking place in various venues in Marrakech, Morocco. 'On Articulating Works & Places' is constructed on ideas relating to 'works as artistic projects' and to 'spaces of appearances'. Anne Szefer Karlsen has been invited to contribute with the production of the exhibition, as well as partake in the conference and publication. Heidi Nikolaisen 'contributes to the exhibition with Sofia, a project with video, photography, text and objects that looks into personal stories as an opposition to the construction of History. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

Ingvild Hovland Kaldal, Ane Lan and Lotte Konow Lund have been invited by Alice Goudsmit to partake in 'Pet Shop', an exhibition at Kunstraum Kreuzberg in Berlin, Germany that dwells of the relation between humans and other animals. Within 'Pet Shop', Ane Lan will exhibit the video-installation Les Animaux and the performance-work Migrating Birds. Lotte Konow Lund will exhibit the video-work Underdog besides new drawings and Ingvild Hovland Kaldal will exhibit Flags for the Atlantic Sea, a new work consisting of fifty small pieces of newspaper nailed to wooden frames in the shape of butterflies. The pieces of newspaper are from the 1920s and were found in the collection of hummingbirds in the Natural History Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden. 'Pet Shop', which takes place from 29 January to March 2010 will also exhibit works by Alex Herzog, Britta Lumer and Lucy Powell.

From 07 February to 06 March curator Daniella van Dijk-Wennberg participates in 'On Independence – The ambivalence of Promise', a thirty-day workshop organized by the Centre for Contemporary Art Lagos, Nigeria. Conceived by Bisi Silva, Artistic Director, CCA Lagos, the workshop is one of the annual in-depth events organised by the CCA focusing on lens-based media and other experimental artistic practices with the aim of encouraging and supporting artists interested in exploring different possibilities within the medium. In 2010 the worshop looks into Fine Art Photography. Other participating artists are Aura Seikkula, Giovanni Carmini, Miriam Backstrom and Rosangela Renno. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

Marius Engh has been invited by Luiza Teixeira de Freitas to exhibit within 'Like Tears in Rain' at the Pal´cio das Artes – Fábrica de Novos Talentos in Porto, Portugal. The exhibition will present new site-specific commissioned works that dwells on the notion of the ephemeral nature of existence. Other invited artists are Cildo Meireles, Carlos Garaicoa and Euan Macdonald. 'Like Tears in Rain' is schedule to take place in June 2009.

From 25 January to 21 March the Hub National Centre for Craft & Design in Lincolnshire, UK presents 'CULTEX', a collaborative project between six artists from Japan and Norway curated by Lealey Miller, Professor of Textile Culture, University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury in the UK. Norwegian artists Anniken Amundsen, Gabriella Göransson, and Eva Schølberg have worked in three trans-national partnerships with Japanese artists Machiko Agano, Yuka Kawai and Kiyonori Shimada over a period of 12 months, either in Norway or Japan. The result is an exhibition of new work, much of which is conceived as sculptural textiles and site-sensitive installations, that reflect the artists' individual and collaborative experience during this period. In the spring/summer of 2009 CULTEX was exhibited at Gallery F15 in Moss, Norway and it will travel to Rugby in Warwickshire, UK; Okayama Prefectuaral Museum of Art, Japan and The Museum of Modern Art in Gunma, Japan.

Hege Loenne has been invited by Michal Jachula to partake in 'Derangement', an exhibition developed as part of the curator's thesis project in the graduate programme at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, USA. Taking place between 07 February and 07 March, 'Derangement' displays works that introduce various rearranged realities, shaped by visual language. For the exhibition Hege Loenne will produce a commissioned site-specific video-installation that uses a scaled model of the gallery at Bard College to produce a confused situation and a feeling of unbalance. Other exhibiting artists are Jacek Malinowskition, Dan Miller, Anna Ostoya and Saul Fletcher.

Until 31 January 2010 Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover, Germany presents 'nichts WHITER | WEITER nichts'. The exhibition dwells on the traditional white cube by presenting works that bring forward issues of visibility/invisibility. Within 'nichts WHITER' Within 'nichts WHITER | WEITER nichts', Lars-Andreas Tovey Kristiansen will exhibit paints from the ongoing series Guilty Until Proven Innocent, in which the artist produces portraits of convicted persons that can only be seeing under a UV light. The artist will also present a new site-specific project in collaboration with the two other exhibiting artists, Sylvia Franzmann and Katharina Kamph as well as an artist talk. 'nichts WHITER' is curated by students of Kestnerlab project at Kestnergesellschaft.

On 19 and 20 February Jannicke Låker partake in 'Art, Image, and Exploitation' a two-day two-day conference curated by Karin Laansoo, Director, PointB International Residency, New York, NY, USA and Maria Arusoo, postgraduate studies in Contemporary Art Theory, Goldsmiths College of Art, London, UK that examines the relationship of image, power, and exploitation in, with and around art. Besides participating in the conference, Jannicke Låker will screen the video-works Running Woman and Sketch for a Rape Scene. The conference takes place at Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, Estonia and will include the participation of Jan Verwoert, Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson.

Between 5 and 14 March 2010 Jana Winderen partakes in AV Festival / Audio Visual Arts taking place in various cities of North East of England. Curated by Rebecca Shatwell, Director, AV Festival, the event focuses on newly commissioned electronic-work featuring visual art, music and moving image. For the 2010 edition, Jana Winderen will developed a new audiovisual work portraiting the River Coquet in rural Northumberland, UK.

Until 13 March Terje Nicolaisen presents a selection of his artist books whithin 'Don't Worry About the Form' at Botkyrka Konsthall, Botkyrka, Sweden. Curated by Joanna Sandell, Director Botkyrka Konsthall and artist Pia Sandström, the exhibition presents artist's books, artists' publications, text art, and various aspects of writing in contemporary art. 'Don't Worry About the Form' stays on view until 13 March 2010 and also introduces works by Jan Nordberg, Lena Gustafsson and Rebecca Stephany.

Lise Bjørne Linnert has been invited by Randy Jayne Rosenberg, Executive Director, Art Works for Change in Oakland, California, to exhibit within 'Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art', taking place at CECUT, EL CUBO in Tijuana, Mexico, from 8 January to 4 April 2010. The exhibition presents the works of 33 international artists dealing with violence against women. Within 'Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art', Lise Bjørne Linnert will present the ongoing projects Desconocida Unknown Ukjent, in which the she invites persons from around the world to embroider two nametags; one label bears the name of a murdered young woman in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the other label the word 'Unknown' in the participant's own language. Linnert has also being invited to present the performance Presence and to organize an embroidery workshop. Other exhibiting artists are Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois, Patricia Evans, Icelandic Love Corp and Yoko Ono. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

From March to May 2010, Unn Fahlstrøm will be a resident at the Residency SIM in Reykjavik, Iceland. During her stay, the artist will be conducting research for a new video-installation based on footage of migrating birds from different countries and locations.

From March to May 2010, Bjørn Hegardt will be a resident at the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland. During his stay, the artist will be producing of a new issue of FUKT magazine with a focus on Polish and Scandinavian contemporary drawing practice. Besides drawings, the issue will present essays written by, among others, Line Ulekleiv, Tommy Olsson, Sebastian Cichocki and Marianna Dobkowska.

From March to April 2010, Stina Högkvist will be a resident at the El Parche Artist Residency in Bogotá, Colombia. During her stay, the curator will be researching the art-scene in Colombia and organise a workshop culminating in an exhibition at El Parche Artist residency within the thematic of sustainable aesthetics. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

Until March 2010, Hjørdis Kurås will be a resident at the Sarai Programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi, India. During her stay, the artist aims to develop the project Delhi Diversity (working title) which focus on diversity in everyday urban life in Delhi. The project is supported by 03–funding*.

Baltic Art Center in Visby, Sweden is currently accepting applications to the 2010 AIR residency for Baltic and Nordic artists and art professionals. To be eligible for the residency applicants must be a professional working artist, curator or contemporary art writer from one of the Baltic or Nordic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland or the Faroe Islands), or be based professionally in one of these countries. The Future Generation Art Prize is a world-wide art prize of 100 000USD established to discover and provide long-term support for a generation of emerging artists. Applicants must be under the age of 35. The jury will select one main Prize winner, who will receive a total of 100 000USD (60 000USD as a cash award, and 40 000USD toward the production of new work). An additional 20 000USD will be allotted to fund artist-in-residency programs for up to five other special prize winners. Images of works by all the shortlisted artists will be posted on the PAC website, and members of the public will be invited to vote via the Internet for People's Choice Prize. OCA News

As of 1 January, 2010, Halvor Haugen joins OCA as a part-time Public Programme Coordinator. Haugen is trained as an artist at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo (SHKS) and Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. He currently holds a part-time position as assistant professor at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO), department of Kunstfag. Haugen has written texts and criticism for Billedkunst, Kunstkritikk.no, Neue Review and Umelec International, and has served as the editor for UKS – Forum for Contemporary Art, a journal for contemporary art and theory.

Erikka Fyrand who has been with the Office for Contemporary Art Norway since 2006 working within the area of the Internaitonal Visitors Programme and also with the field of project production for OCA's public platform will be leaving her position to pursue further professional development interests in her field. Erikka has been a key component to OCA's development in recent years and we all wish her sincere good wishes in her further professional development and future endeavors.


*03–funding: The purpose of the 03–funds, as allocated by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to OCA, is to further develop cooperation and professional networking between OCA and the constituency of artists, independent cultural producers and organisations that are located in designated countries or associated with 03–countries. This includes but is not limited to professional research visits by cultural producers, artists and curators, short-term residencies for cultural producers and artists, and the development of seminars, conferences, art projects, workshops, etc. that focus on the further development of professional exchange and networking between and among countries, project development and pilot projects on an international scale.
