On 3 September, Norwegian curator Hans Askheim launches Overland: London to Beijing, a curatorial research project developed by Askheim, Tom Keogh and Miranda Pope. The project duels on various processes of contemporary curating, inspired by the shifting cultural, economic and political positions of countries. Within Overland: London to Beijing, a commissioned artwork by Tobias Rehberger is transported overland from London to Beijing, via Istanbul, Almaty and Xian. The artwork, a model for a sculpture, is built by the artist and carried to various locations where the curators will use it to build a sculpture in collaboration with local institutions, curators and artists.
Following the launch at Goethe Institute London, where Tobias Rehberger will hold a conversation with curator Lisa Le Feuvre, Overland: London to Beijing will open in Istanbul, Turkey on 10 September at 19:00. Developed as a partnership with Platform Garanti, the project will be presented as a side event to the 11th International Istanbul Biennial, curated by What, How and for Whom/WHW and taking place in different venues from 12 September to 8 Novermber 2009. In the following months Overland: London to Beijing will be presented at Tengri-Umay Gallery, Almaty, Kazakhstan; Xian Center for More Art , Xian, China and CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, China.
This project has been supported by O3–funds as underwritten by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for enhancing collaboration in the contemporary art field with professional artists in countries designated by the MFA. The purpose of the O3–funds as allocated to OCA is to further develop cooperation and professional networking between OCA and the constituency of artists, independent cultural producers, and organisations that are located in designated countries.
Hans Askheim (b.1972 in Bærum, Norway) is a curator based in London, UK. He has studied at Goldsmiths College in London, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA and at the National College of Art and Design, Oslo, Norway. Among the projects curated by Askeim are 'Real Vague, Betonsalon, Paris (2009); 'Responding to Aernout Mik', Camden Arts Centre, London (2007); 'And yet it Moves!', MOT, London (2006) and 'Reflection Repetition', Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Bærum, Norway (2003).
