Between 1978 and 1982 protests against the building of a dam on the Alta river transformed Sami politics and culture. For the first time the possibility of indigenous rights entered into Norwegian national consciousness. Niillas Somby was one of the lead protesters and a key figure in the assertion of Sami rights. Commissioned by Office for Contemporary Art Norway, this film is part of a long-term research project ‘Thinking at the Edge of the World. Perspectives from the North’.
